OEM PARTS MARKETING – ESSENTIAL, NOT OPTIONAL

If you ask me…
For years, OEMs have relied on the assumption that customers understand the value of genuine parts. That assumption no longer holds true.

Today’s automotive customer is more informed, more price-aware and more exposed to non-genuine alternatives than ever before. Aftermarket brands don’t just compete on cost, they compete on confidence. Slick packaging, persuasive messaging and ease of availability have closed the perceived gap.

The uncomfortable reality
When the difference isn’t clearly communicated, it gets mentally discounted. If OEMs don’t clearly articulate why genuine parts matter, customers will decide that they don’t. This isn’t just a marketing problem, it’s a leadership one.

Most genuine parts communications still lean on legacy logic. For example: ‘designed for your vehicle’, ‘built to OEM standards’ and ‘peace of mind’, are churned out with predictable regularity across OEM marketing campaigns. All of which may be true, but all insufficient for today’s market.

The customer has reframed the questions
Legacy statements assume a level of trust and technical understanding that no longer exists by default. Customers today ask different questions:

  • What’s the real risk if I don’t choose genuine?
  • What am I actually paying for?
  • Does it really make a difference to my driving, my safety, my resale value?

Silence, or vague reassurance lets the aftermarket answer those questions instead.

Time to think outside the box
Successful brands don’t talk at customers, they reframe the decision. The conversation is moved from parts as commodities and towards parts as an extension of the vehicle itself – materials, research, development and validation as part of a system, not a standalone item.

OEMs need to stop assuming that ‘genuine’ is self-explanatory and start treating it as a value proposition that must be earned, explained and consistently reinforced across every touchpoint – from service advisors to dealerships to ownership communications and sales campaigns.

A little creativity goes a long way
You’re perhaps not going to win any awards for a parts campaign, but the returns from investing time, thought and budget are worth far more than any gong. Multi-channel campaigns that communicate strong messages visually and verbally – in ways your market doesn’t expect – give brands permission to start conversations they’re otherwise locked out of.

Too many OEMs continue to overlook the revenue stream that parts provide, choosing instead to pour attention into new vehicle sales alone. With miserly budgets, or no budget at all, genuine parts are left invisible. They shouldn’t be. Genuine parts deserve a regular, deliberate place on the marketing calendar, treated with the same strategic intent as the vehicles they’re designed to support.

Genuine parts don’t just protect vehicles, they protect brand trust. However, only if leaders are willing to stop assuming that the badge alone does the explaining.
